F Chord Guitar Tips Easy Finger Positions for Beginners Sign up successful 1. Barre chords are too hard. Can’t I just play a different F shape? This is a good point, and to be honest, sometimes you shouldn’t bother with all six strings. Maybe three or four notes are plenty for the sound you’re looking for. But there are other times that you really need a full six-string sound, or perhaps you need the low F to keep the bassline across the chords shaped the way you want. In case you don’t want or need all six strings, below  are a couple other options. Included are the six-string F shape, two Fs with fewer strings, and a common chord that is often played when guitarists don’t want to play the full F chord. Beware, this last example is actually an Fmaj7 chord (notice the open E on the first string).   2) Do I have to press down all six strings with one finger? No. This is where many people struggle when first learning the F chord. If you look carefully at the chart above, youll notice that there are only three strings with dots on the first fret. This means that you can hold down the low F (first fret, sixth string) with the tip of your index, and curve your finger slightly above the center strings and press the two highest strings with the base of your curved index finger. You only have to press down half the number of strings as most people think! It may take some time practicing  but it will save you a lot of energy.   Once this technique is mastered, it’s possible to actually cover all six strings gently (muting them all) and then while strumming, isolate specific strings to press down one at a time with the same finger position muting the rest. It sounds tricky, but it can definitely be done! 3) If I can’t make all the notes play, I should just squeeze the neck more, right? Another big misconception among guitarists is that barre chords, like the F chord, require lots of pressure from the thumb pressing forward on the neck. This often works, but takes much more energy than players usually realize. Because of this, after a few measures of a barre, beginning guitarists often complain of pain or cramping in the thumb or wrist. The pressure you put on the back of the neck works against your fingers pressing on the strings. Because of our natural reflexes, our body tells our fingers to press extra hard, so the notes tend to ring but with lots of extra work on our part. Resist this urge when practicing and playing the F chord. Many guitarists can play barres without their thumb touching the neck at all!   Conclusion Now that weve proved wrong some of the common myths about the F chord, have fun practicing it! Introvert Whisperer / 4 Warning Signs that You’re Avoiding the Hard Stuff - Introvert Whisperer 4 Warning Signs that You’re Avoiding the Hard Stuff You aren’t alone as an introvert and leader when it comes to avoiding the hard things our professional life imposes on us.  It just seems that way some times.  You look around you and see all kinds of people getting around at parties, making sales calls or carrying the conversation in a business meeting.  It looks easy so you think it must be â€" for them but not you.   You’ve decided (or shall I say rationalized) why doing the hard things are just “not you”.  That makes it ok to avoid doing it.  Doing things that isn’t authentically you or your style might help you buy the story you’re telling.   Is that you?   I got into a conversation with a good friend who was avoiding the marketing and promotion for a newly published book of hers.  As we conversed, she admitted she really wasn’t comfortable doing the promotion but quickly added “But I’m ok with it.”  Hmm, you’re ok with not promoting a book you just published?   By being ok with avoiding the hard stuff, you limit your potential.   Is limiting your potential ok with you?   I realize that us introverts have challenges with things like speaking to strangers, selling, networking and self-promotion.  I get it â€" big time.  The issue is letting those challenges get between you and your goalsâ€"and then somehow making it ok in your mind.   Here are the warning signs of avoiding the hard stuff:   You’ve convinced yourself it’s “not you”.  In this day of self-actualization and self-examination, we don’t do things that aren’t really us.  Only a lot of things are like that until we choose to change. You’ve convinced yourself it’s ok to not do something you know you need to do to succeed.  It’s like getting ok with not zipping your pants cause you’re too fat.  â€œI’m happy within myself.” You’ve convinced yourself that waiting (for what? A miracle?) will somehow make the bad thing go away.  You think waiting will change things only you’re doing nothing to make things change. You’ve convinced yourself that whatever “it” is, really isn’t that bad.  You’re avoiding telling the crappy but vocal employee their performance is bad.  Although now, you’re trying to warm up to their bad ways.   Here is how you push through those tough, hard-to-do things:   Realize what your fear.  You can’t solve a problem you don’t identify. Recognize there are multiple solutions.  You don’t have to do everything yourself or by yourself.  Find and hire an expert.  Ask for help of an expert. Realize that you can learn to do something with practice.  You wouldn’t let your kid give up on learning to ride a bike.  It’s going to be scary and maybe even painful for a while until you learn to master something. Learn to live with a certain level of discomfort.  The best advice I ever received was to never get comfortable or it becomes too easy to stay put and never reach for the stars. Break it down into small steps.  The scariest thing looks much easier when you break it down as a process with small baby steps.   We love our rationalizations.  They comfort us as nothing else can.  Don’t let them comfort you out of greatness, promotions and more pay. 4 Alternate Guitar Tunings for Beginners Maile Proctor Whether you just started guitar lessons or youve been playing for a while, you may be itching to learn some new songs and take on some new challenges. You might be wondering: where can I go from here? Thats where alternate guitar tunings come in! With this guide from Michael L., youll learn how alternate guitar tunings can take your playing to the next level One of the amazing things about the guitar is its versatility. Not only can you play rhythm and/or melody in different genres, but you can also change the tuning (or the key) to create different atmospheres. Heres the deal: Not all songs are written to be played in standard E-A-D-G-B-E tuning, so if you want to expand your range as a guitarist, you need to learn play some alternate guitar tunings. Alternate guitar tunings, or open tunings, allow you to play new songs and explore new music styles. Essentially, alternate guitar tunings will expand your range and skill set. If the only alternate tuning you know is  Drop D tuning, then this tutorial will introduce you to some new concepts. We will focus on  three open  tunings: Open G, DADGAD, and Open D. Alternate Guitar Tunings for Beginners Drop D Tuning You may already be familiar with  drop D tuning:  Take your low E string and tune it down a whole step to D. In this tuning, you can play power chords by barring the low three strings. Drop D tuning is usually  associated with metal music, but you can also play other songs like  the Foo Fighters Everlong and I Might Be Wrong by Radiohead. Open G Tuning Open G tuning requires three strings to change notes. Tune the E strings down a whole step to D, and the A string down a whole step to G. Now when you strum the guitar, youll  play a G chord. This tuning makes the guitar resemble a banjo, except with  a banjo, the low G string is a high G string and the low D is not there. You can play some banjo songs in this tuning, substituting the high G with the low G offers a new sound on some traditional banjo songs. I primarily use this tuning for blues, folk, bluegrass, and rock, but Im sure you can find other genres to play in this tuning. A couple of songs that use this tuning are Poor Black Mattie by R.L Burnside and Death Letter by Son House (or covered by White Stripes). The beauty of open G tuning  is that you can strum the bottom five strings together and play a melody with any of the strings as long as the note is in the key G. You can also get any major chord you like if you barre the fretboard on the corresponding right fret (the chord is based off the notes on the G strings). If you want a minor chord, barre the fret but play a half-step lower, on the B string. Alternating between the low G and D strings gives you fun bass lines, too. If you would like to learn more chord shapes simply look online for banjo chord chart and apply those shapes to the guitar in this tuning. DAGAD Tuning DADGAD is very similar to open G.  For this tuning, just tune the fifth  string back up to A and the B string to A. This tuning opens the door for some really neat sounding modal music. You can play folk music, like Paul Simons version of Scarborough Fair and Armistice Day, some rock music like Led Zeppelins Kashmir, or even nu-metal like Slipknots Circle. Open D Tuning Open D tuning requires four strings to change notes. Tune the E strings down to D, the G string to F#, and the B string to A. Now, when you strum the guitar, youll get a D chord. Again, I mostly use this tuning for rural music (blues, country, bluegrass, ragtime, etc.) This tuning is also my favorite to  play the slide guitar. Go ahead and  strum steadily on the low D string while playing melody notes on the high D and A strings, and tell me thats not one of the most sultry sounds youve heard! A couple of my favorite songs in open D are Blind Willie McTell by Statesboro Blues and Bob Dylans Corina, Corina. As with open G, you can find any major chord by barring the corresponding fret (the chord is based off the note on the D strings). If you want a minor chord, play a half-step down on the F# string. Here are a couple of open D chords, besides barre chords, to get you started. G7 A7 3 2 2 0 1 1 0 2 2 0 0 2 I hope this gives you some new ideas on how to approach the guitar.
